Why is my dog yelping when I touch her hind leg near her ovary?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 6 months old | 4 lbs

I'm really worried right now. Our little girl seems to be in pain. Every time I gently touch the area near her hind leg and it's right where her ovary is ,she yelps really loud and runs away other than that she seems to be her usual playful self . Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Should I take her to the vet to check her up? What might be causing the pain? I'm scared it might be something serious which hopefully it isn't. Thank you very much for your continuous help.

If she seems to be in pain than she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She could have a musculoskeletal issue, abdominal pain, infection, etc. Your vet can localize the pain, run labwork, and take X-rays, if needed, to diagnose the problem. Once a cause is identified, your vet can determine the best way to treat. She may need an anti-inflammatory and/or pain medications to help. Hope she feels better soon.

Poor Bella! It does sound like she's quite painful for some reason. I often see these symptoms with dogs who have back pain due to a pinched nerve or herniated disc, so I suspect that something like this may be the problem. She may also have abdominal pain for some reason, or some other type of injury that isn't visible from the outside. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam, since it sounds like she's quite uncomfortable. Your vet can do x-rays or other testing if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it.
