When should my outdoor cat come inside due to cold winter weather?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

My question about my outdoor cat is what does the outdoor temperature coldness during the winter have to be before she gets too cold and needs to come inside? Thank you

Every cat is different in terms of coat thickness, & general tolerance to the cold. Certainly if it is windy, raining or snowing, cold tolerance will be lower. If she has a place to get out of the weather, she could be quite cozy staying out all night. But once the temps start to consistently stay at the freezing level, I would encourage her to come indoors. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
