My cat has gooey, watery eyes and they sometimes shut. What's wrong?

What is wrong with my cat? He has gooey eyes very liquidy sometimes and his eye sometimes gets shut from the liquid coming out of his eye.

He looks to have a case of conjunctivitis. This can be caused by a respiratory infection or trauma to the eye. Because it is swollen and has a discharge it is best to get him checked. If there is an ulcer or foreign body then that will require a different treat plan compared to an infection. In the meantime you can try to flush the eye with sterile saline eye drops and apply a warm compress to help with swelling and pain
