My senior dog is vomiting, losing weight, and drinking a lot. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 11 years and 10 months old | 13 lbs

She has been throwing up a lot, its always white and foamy. She drinks a ton. Has rapidly lost weight over the last 5 months, she used to weigh 25 and now she weighs 13lbs. She has been wormed 6 months ago. She has been coughing more at night. We had a melanoma taken off her about a year ago. She sometimes acts somewhat disoriented/confused. I have not changed what or how much i feed her, she always has access to food and water, i have started feeding her canned food 2x a day though.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. With your description of what her symptoms are, I am concerned with what may be going on, especially with a weight loss of 12 pounds! With her age and symptoms, I would strongly suggest having a veterinarian examine her and test her blood. With the symptoms you are describing, I am concerned this could be diabetes or kidney disease. The more these diseases progress, you are likely to see the symptoms you are describing. I would have her blood tested to check the liver and kidney function, electrolytes, glucose level and complete blood count. I would also test her urine as part of a full workup. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
