Dog gassy, soft stool after eating human food. Vet or chicken/rice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 75 lbs

My dog has been gassy since yesterday. She let’s out gas every 5-10 minutes. Her bowel movements have been normal since it’s started. However when I took her out tonight, her stool was soft and non-form. It’s close to being diarrhea. The only thing I can think of is I gave her 2 burgers and a cookie for her birthday on the 15th, but it’s weird that it would take 2-3 days to kick in. Luckily, other than that she’s been normal. Should I start her on a chicken and rice diet or take her to the vet?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I don't think this is the situation in which I would recommend rushing to your veterinarian. This simply sounds like a case of dietary indiscretion and could very well have stemmed from the burgers and cookie you fed to her. I would recommend starting a diet of chicken and rice with a little cottage cheese and feed this until the symptoms subside. If she worsens or develops new symptoms such as vomiting and lethargy, I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for further testing and treatment recommendations. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help answer any you may have.
