My 7-week puppy has diarrhea. Is it his new food or parasites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 30 lbs

My new puppy (7 weeks) has grainy diarrhea. I don't know what he was fed before we got him but we have him eating dry puppy chow. He's had diarrhea for a few days, is it because of the possible diet change?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you have not had Rambos stool checked for parasites I would bring a stool sample to your veterinarian to have it checked for intestinal parasites such as coccidia. This requires antiparasite medication to treat effectively. If the stool does not have evidence of parasites, this certainly could be the food. I typically recommend science diet, Purina one, royal canin or natural balance. If he is lethargic at all and not eating, I would have him examined by a veterinarian and checked for an infection such as parvo. I hope this helps! I would also recommend using a probiotics such as Purina fortiflora. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
