My 1-week-old bottle-fed kitten has bloody diarrhea. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 0.5 lbs

7-10 days old kitten (with no mother) have diarrhea since 12 Nov 2017. I found them in a box without a mother. Took them in on 11 Nov. There are two kittens, Sansa(F) and Midnight (M) Sansa has diarrhea at least 4x a day. Midnight not so severe. I gave them both electrolytes+kmr but no changes in condition. Today Sansa has some bloody diarrhea. Help! What can I do to make her better?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor kittens! The kitten formulas can cause diarrhea or constipation. I recommend buying a different brand and mixing it with the KMR. If the bloody diarrhea continues with Sansa I would take her to a vet for an exam, they may want to start antibiotics. With bottle fed kittens I recommend starting to wean on to canned kitten food at 3 weeks of age to avoid the diarrhea/constipation side effects of kitten formula. I hope this helps and I wish you and the kittens the best!
