My finicky senior cat is losing weight. What should I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered

Hi, my cat Neo is 11yrs old, desexed domestic. A finicky eater. Loves canned human tuna, rarely eats his biscuits anymore. Which I think kept the weight on. Always has tuna, water & biscuits left out. He is loosing weight, has always been slim. Ive started to buy hot chicken, cook up beef, & hand feed him. The change of diet sometimes gives him runny stool, so I give it a day or two for him to recover. He enjoys eating, not stressed, seemingly content cat. How do I put weight back on him?

I would actually recommend taking him to his vet for blood work before trying to get the weight back on him at home. Usually, when cats lose weight without you actively trying to having them lose weight, there is some disease going on. It could be kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or many other causes. Good luck!
