Why is my kitten food obsessed, won't eat dry, and begs for food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 months and 29 days old | 3 lbs

I have had a few cats in my life, but I’ve never delt with this problem before, so I need some advice. Our new kitten is obsessed with food. She has plenty of dry food in her bowel, but won’t eat it, Instead waits for her half a can of cat food in the morning and in evening. She is also obsessed with our food- she acts like a dog! She goes crazy when we eat- I have to lock her up in the bathroom! It’s hard with kids- who want to snack all day! Her stools are clear at the vet. What to do??

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is most likely a behavioral issue as you pointed out instead of a medical issue. The main thing to get this issue resolved is to either transition fully to a dry diet or stay solely on canned food. If you prefer the dry diet, you would basically give her the total amount she needs split in 2 to 3 feedings without any canned diet. She will likely not eat it at first as she is expecting the canned diet. However, she will soon realize that she has to eat it and will. Good luck!
