Why is my betta fish staying at the top, not moving or eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a question about our betta fish. He seems to be hanging at the top of the tank, not moving much. We have a heater and the tank is at the right temp. He only started doing this the last couple of days. He isn't really eating or moving around. Just sitting high up at the top of the tank.

Bettas are air breathers, so it is not uncommon to see them hanging around near the surface. Confirm water temperature is between 78 F and 80 F. Use a home test kit or submit a water sample for testing. Most pet stores or aquarists will do this for free or for a nominal fee. Aim for 0.25ppm or less for ammonia and nitrites, nitrates can be 30ppm or less. Elevated levels of any of these could drive him to the surface. Partial, or complete for small tanks, water changes can be done to correct chemistry. Use only aged or conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock.
