Why is my dog's ear sore wet and losing fur? Is it a hot spot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 26 lbs

Hi. I discovered an open sore behind my dog's ear, the fur is missing where the sore is & the sore appears wet, like mucous membrane but not necessarily oozing. My 1st thought is that my other dog bit her, bcuz he is dominate over chew sticks & toys but they get along otherwise but he has attacked her over these things before, but she never yelped in pain & i don't see any holes where his teeth wudve sunk into her skin. I dont know how long its been there but i pet her often & just discovered it

It looks like it could be what we call moist dermatitis, or a hot spot. This is commonly started off by allergies and scratching, then the skin becomes infected and it gets red and inflamed within hours. These typically respond well to antibiotic therapy and sometimes steroids are added as well if it is really inflamed. I would encourage you to have her seen by a veterinarian tomorrow. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
