My cat has loose stool but is acting normal. What can I do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 months and 12 days old | 4 lbs

My cat has had loose bowel movements since yesterday morning but no increase in the number of times he has emptied his bowels. His behaviour hasn’t changed, is still meowing for food although I have only given him chicken and rice since the first loose movement. He still wants to play and is drinking plenty of water. He is a house cat.

Cats can get loose stool for several different reasons including: a bacterial infection, parasitic infection, dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn’t have). You are doing the right thing by starting a bland diet. You can also substitute tuna for the chicken. Also I would recommend adding in a probiotic (Culturelle over the counter is the only non-prescription one I would recommend) daily to his food to help normalize the bacterial flora in his gut. As long as he is acting normal otherwise and eating well, you can continue to see how things go over th next 24-48 hrs. Hopefully the stools start to normalize. If he does not improve then a vet visit is the next best step towards resolving Finn’s loose stools. Best wishes and take care.
