Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 14 lbs
Hi. my dog was recently diagnosed with three small bladder stones. One medium one is in the bladder, and two very small ones are in the urethra. He is a male miniature schnauzer, 4 years old. He is on antibiotics and anti inflammatories. We are going to try the prescription diet today. My vet says that surgery is better because there may be an obstruction in the future(too expensive). can these small stones be dissolved? My dog is still urinating and straining a bit and it is the 3rd day.

I'm hate to hear about Max's bladder stones. The stones may dissolve if the infection clears up and IF the stones are made purely of struvite. There are many types of stones and the others cannot be dissolved. For a male dog with stones already in the urethra, yes, surgery is the safest and fasted option. If Max becomes blocked, he needs emergency care immediately. The stones can dissolve anywhere between 2-6 weeks on average. I hope this helps.
