My puppy has loose stool after parvo exposure. How long to worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 16 days old | 12 lbs

I had one puppy diagnosed with parvo 5 days ago. I have another puppy that is having loose stool but not diarrhea. No other signs, she is still eating and drinking. How long do I need to worry?

One other comment. Please make sure that all pets (dogs) who have been exposed get a booster parvo vaccination. Also, make sure that the other puppy is dewormed and vaccinated. The healthier the puppy, the healthier the immune system. Good luck

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about your situation. Viral shedding can occur up to 2 weeks or longer, and affected animals should be isolated during this period and vaccinated. I hope your other puppy has been vaccinated and that the appropriate boosters were given to protect the other puppy as much as possible. The incubation period is 3-7 days before clinical signs develop after infection. I can't find a specific time period that the virus can survive in the environment but it's safe to say that the virus can survive a few months depending upon the environmental conditions. I would advise that you talk with your veterinarian about cleaning and disinfecting your environment to decrease the amount of virus in and out of your home. Good luck with your pups.
