Why is my puppy straining to poop and has blood in his stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 8 days old | 10 lbs

My 6 month old toy Aussie has poops with a bit of blood in them last week. This was after my friend had fed him cheese and chicken from a wrap, and my puppy was straining to poop a ton. I fed him chicken and rice for a couple days and it subsided. Now I went back to his normal pedigree wet food diet. The food makes him poop a ton, so he has been straining a lot to get out poops that are very small. He had a few drops of blood following a normal soft poo this morning. Is this from straining?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be from straining to have a bowel movement or diarrhea. It could also be from intestinal parasites. I recommend taking a fresh stool sample to the vet so they can look for microscopic eggs. If found they can treat for the parasites and the blood. Good luck and kisses to Alfie!
