Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old

Jake penis came out a very long way and was hanging out for a while... he couldn’t walk or get it back in. After around 5 minutes he finally got it back in... what could cause this?

this condition is called paraphimosis, he was lucky he could get it back eventually as this can easily end up in the emergencies. this is caused by over excitation, causing excessive swelling of the penis which ends up with the dog being unable to retract the penis back in place. when it lasts longer than a couple hours it is considered to be an emergency, the dog needs to be sedated and the penis is then put back in place by the vet.

It could happen again, it is very difficult to predict, it usually happens more to unneutered dogs though so maybe it was a one time thing. overexcitment is usually at the cause of this condition called paraphimosis.
