My dogs ate chocolate cake. What should I do if they seem fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 60 lbs

Dear Doctor, My question is that these two dogs share a piece of this cacao cake today at noon and I just knew that until now. The last time I saw them is 6pm and they look fine. Do you think they will get into trouble with it? The white dog is 7 years old and another one is 3 years old. Please help me I have no idea about it at all and I feel so nervous...Thank you so much!!!

It will depend on the amount of cake each dog ingested. The larger dog would likely not show any serious signs of toxicity but may have some degree of gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea). If the smaller dog ate more, it would pose more of a fish of toxicity. Since the ingestion was more than 2 hours ago, making them vomit may be of little therapeutic value. Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea lethargy, hyperactivity, increased heart rate or tremors. Seek veterinary attention if any of these symptoms develop. Treatment will be largely supportive but cardiac monitoring may be indicated. Vomiting or diarrhea with no other symptoms can be managed at home with a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve.
