My dog won't eat for days but is acting normal. Vet visit needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 55 lbs

My 2 1/2 year old lab mix hasn't been eating for about 2 1/2 days. Twice he's eaten about half of what he normally does, but that took a lot of effort on our part. However, in every other way he's acting fine. He's playing with our other dog, going on walks, eating treats in a toy today, drinking, peeing, etch. I'd love to get your thoughts about what we should do. It seems silly to take him to our vet if he seems fine in every other way, but it's also very odd that he isn't eating. Thanks

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is certainly good that he is feeling well otherwise. However, that does not completely rule out something going on. I recommend that you try to entice his appetite with perhaps a new diet. You could also try adding chicken broth or dog grade gravy (you may find at your local pet store) to his food. If no improvement and his appetite continues to be abnormal, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
