My dog pees outside but only poops inside. How can I fix this?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 17 lbs

My JRT, Artie, will go outside for between 20-30 min about 5-7 times a day, but when he comes inside he poops on the furniture, the bed, and the floor. This is very confusing considering when he whines to go outside, he is immediately let out. He will pee outside fine, but pooping he will only do inside. HELP!!

How frustrating! I would recommend crate training as he should be very reluctant to dirty a small crate and only having him free in the house if you are able to directly supervising him (ideally on a leash) until you can retrain more appropriate toileting behavior! It is helpful to have him outdoors on a leash also so you can monitor what he is doing when he is out and praise and treat him when he does go outside
