My senior cat is lethargic, losing weight, and has black tarry stool.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | 5 years and 9 months old | 6.4 lbs

My cat is 15 years old and just recently she has lost quite a bit of weight and this week especially she has been very lethargic and just doesn't seem like her normal self. Then tonight I noticed that she had a couple accidents outside of the litter box and they were very black and tarry looking. I'm concerned it might be something serious. What could it possibly be and how soon should I get her into a vet? Thank you

Black tarry stool can be a sign of stomach or intestinal bleeding. Snickers could have a stomach ulcer or cancer in her intestines. I recommend an exam, blood panel and X-ray to see if they can find the cause of the weight loss and abnormal stool. Once they have a diagnosis then they can give you a treatment plan. Hopefully with treatment she will feel better and gain weight again. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Snickers.
