My dog has bloody diarrhea. Is Metronidazole enough, or needs labs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | 8 years and 8 months old | 116 lbs

Leila my 8 yrs old female Rottweiler have a bloody diarrhoea 4-5 in 24 hours. We went to have her check they only asked to get stool sample without other blood work and diagnosed with gastroenteritis send us home with prescription Metronidazole 500mg 1 tab 1/2 2x a day for 10 days. Physically she’s looks good and eating well. Is this enough for her or needs blood work done as well. Im worried . Today she only made once since morning still bloody otherwise all is the same. Thanks Madz

Metronidazole is a common therapy for bloody stool. As long as she is eating and feeling ok otherwise, then I probably wouldn’t have done lab work either. However, if she stops eating, starts vomiting, or not improving then a follow up visit with lab work and possibly x-rays would be appropriate. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
