Is my older cat aggressive to my new kitten? How to stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

Hi there! I got my second kitten three weeks ago. Everything is going well however my older cat who is 8 months is pinning her down and swiping at her. We keep them in separate rooms as much as we can but when they are together this is happening. Mia is only 7 weeks and we fear that Luna is going to really hurt her as she is alot bigger than her. I would really like to know if Luna is being aggressive or if she just wants to play with her and how we can reduce this? Thank you!

If she is being really aggressive by using claws and biting then yes she could hurt the kitten. You could spray her with some water when she does this if you are concerned. I would also get some feliway diffusers and spray. This is a cat pheromone that will sometimes help to calm a cat down. It doesn't work for everyone. I would continue to separate them when you cannot monitor them closely. Also make sure you are still spending plenty of time with the older cat to ensure she doesn't feel left out. Sometimes it take a few weeks for them to get accustomed. Also make sure you have at least 2-3 litter boxes - if they are sharing one this can also cause some issues. I hope this helps!!
