My dog is aggressive towards other dogs on leash. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 34 lbs

My dog is as sweet as can be with humans, and lived with three other dogs in his foster home, but he has been showing a lot of aggression towards other dogs recently. He growls and barks a lot. He gets very stiff and stares them down. His back looks like this, but this is not a picture of him. What should we be doing? We aren’t sure if it is just leash aggression, because he has never met other dogs with us other than when he is on leash. It makes it very scary for us because we are afraid.

Hi. Great question, and good that you are away and reaching out cause this can turn in to even worse if he's not on a leash. If you just got him from foster care, he may be adjusting and could get better with time. If he's been with you awhile, it's concerning. I would ask your veterinarian for a referral to a professional trainer that comes to homes to observe and help train us as well. In the meantime, lots of positive reinforcement when he's good, always keep him on a leash until it's all under control.
