Hi, my 8 y/o pit mix has a poorly demarcated growth (?) on the paw that she sometimes licks at. She has had a mast cell tumor removed on the head half a year ago and two weeks ago, a histiocytoma removed under the toe, on the same paw. The popliteal lymph node is swollen still from the time the histiocytoma was removed--cytology suggests a reactive lymph node- not sure if it's related. I have attached a picture-- what could this be? Thanks.

This is hard to see well in the photo but this looks like a wart which is a benign growth. I'm glad you took a photo of it. That way you can take additional photos to monitor it for any changes. If it is growing or Val licks it enough to keep it irritated then I would have it surgically removed. While it doesn't look like a typical mast cell tumor I would bring her for a veterinary exam if it gets bigger. They can do a needle aspirate to determine if it is a mast cell tumor. Due to the location I prefer to remove these growths when they are still fairly small as there isn't much extra skin on the paw to close the incision. If it is removed they can do a full biopsy for a definitive diagnosis. At this point though I'm not overly concerned about it and would just keep and eye out for any change. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Val.
