My dog chipped a tooth, no pain. Does she need an urgent vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 16 days old | 43 lbs

My dog chipped a tooth chewing. Do I need her to see a vet immediately or can it wait until next shots in a few months? No pain, still chews on that side, no pulp showing. I couldn't get a picture of the underside.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you do not see the pulp, it should be fine to wait until your next veterinary visit. If there is a small dark spot that you can see where the tooth is broken, I would have this addressed sooner rather than later as this indicates pulp exposure. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hello, that looks like a slab fracture which commonly happens in dogs that like to chew on hard objects. Ideally, she could have that tooth repaired, however, if you do not have it assessed its like to be fine. However, complications with slab fractures could include a tooth infection. If you see any change in color of her tooth, bad smell, swelling, or pain when eating then Pharah should definitely be evaluated. Hope this helps and best of luck.
