My dog has white segments in his poop. Is it tapeworm? How to treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 83 lbs

I think my dog has a tapeworm and I want to confirm that. I’m attaching a photo of his stool. He’s a German Shepherd, 6 years old, and takes Trifexis for heart worms.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on the pictures that you have provided, it does appear as though there are many tapeworm segments in the stool of Jax. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian and bringing a stool sample in to your vet to confirm this. Jax will likely need a specific dewormer known as praziquantel to treat the tapeworm infection. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns that you may have. I am also available via phone or text based consultation if needed.
