My dog has dark stool, rash, not eating, lethargy. Should I go to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Female | spayed | 75 lbs

My 6 year old american akita is experiencing melena, a red rash on her stomach, she won't eat, shortness of breath, lethargic, she won't let you list up her tail without screaming and freaking out, she can't lay her head down for more than a few seconds. She has epilepsy that she takes pills for but it's been difficult giving it to her cause she's not eating and throws it up. Please help

I am sorry she is so sick. I would highly encourage you to be seen by a veterinarian. Several underlying problems can cause melena. If there is also a rash I worry that she could have a bleeding disorder. Blood work will likely be recommended. I hope you are able to get the help she needs soon.

Hi and thanks for your post this morning on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear Akira is not feeling very well lately. Dark stools like the one you posted with a picture is indicative of an upper gastrointestinal bleed such as stomach ulcer. This is concerning and can cause anemia is left untreated. The shortness of breath is also a concern along with the sensitivity around her tail region as well as seeming uncomfortable and unsettled. All of these are signs of pain and discomfort. It is unclear what is causing all of these symptoms without seeing Akira and examining her first. From what you mention, it sounds like there are multiple issues occurring with Akira. My best advice to you is to have Akira taken to a veterinary hospital as soon as possible (ER vet hospitals are typically open 24 hours) so that she can be evaluated and treated appropriately. She will likely need IV fluids, gastric medications, bloodwork, x-rays, and an abdominal ultrasound. I wouldn't wait on this too long and would take her in as soon as possible. Best of luck to you and I hope Akira makes a swift recovery!
