Will a vaccinated new cat get feline herpes from my infected cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 8 years and 7 months old

I have a cat with feline herpes virus in the eye. I put Idoxuridine in her eye everyday which keeps the virus under control. I would like to bring another cat into my house. If the new cat receives or has received the vaccine, will it be protected from contracting the virus from my cat?

I am sorry to hear about Eliza! The herpes vaccination in cats does not offer 100 percent protection but it does decrease the risk and if a cat does contract the virus it decreases the symptoms drastically so it is unlikely for them to be as severely affected as an unvaccinated cat or young kitten with an immature immune system.
