My cat is bleeding and passed a bloody mass. Is she pregnant or sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | unspayed | 7 lbs

My female cat was dripping blood and then a bloody tampon looking thing fell out and she ate it? She could be pregnant but not positive. Should I be concerned?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oh dear, poor Xena. I can not tell you definitively what happened, but it does sound like she aborted a fetus. This, of course, is not a normal thing & may indicate that your cat is unwell, or she may have a uterine infection. I would urge you to have her examined, especially if you hope to save the rest of her litter ( if still possible ). Otherwise, please consider having her spayed to prevent a serious infection since she may not be able to maintain a normal pregnancy. Take care.

Poor Chelle! It is not normal to see blood dripping from a pregnant female cat even during labor, and if she is pregnant and bleeding, that is a medical emergency and she will need to see a vet immediately. She could also have something else very seriously wrong with her such as pyometra, which is a life threatening infection of the uterus. Finally, she could have a UTI or bladder stones causing the blood dripping and wet spot on the couch. Without seeing her in person, I cannot say for certain what is causing her symptoms but given you think she is pregnant and she has been bleeding, the best thing to do it take her into a vet immediately. She should have veterinary care right away to diagnose what is causing her bleeding so she can be treated as needed. Good luck, I hope this helps!
