Dog has bloody ear knot, shaking head. How to help before vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has a big bloody infected looking knot on his ear, he keeps shaking his head and hitting it on stuff too and he’s never done that before. I can’t get my vet to see him until next weekend, what can I do to help him until then?

It sounds like he has an ear hematoma which is caused by excessive shaking of the head. It is usually secondary to an ear infection. You could clean his ear with an ear cleaner and see if that helps but he really needs to be seen by a vet ASAP. If he has a hematoma then it will need to be opened and drained by a vet.
