Senior dog losing weight, won't eat. Why is vet recommending an MRI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 60 lbs

10 year old Black Lab. Shes allergic to flea spit (?). has consistently flipped her dog food bowl then eats the dry food off the floor. We tried everythig to stop this but have lived with it. No longer eating her dry food at all and will only eat the cat dry food or chicken, not the rice. Shes down 20lbs. Over a year, to 60lbs. Vet says slight anemia &wants an MRI, after blood, stool &urine tests. Why its needed&why they cant tell from blood tests. The Vet techs always upsell & scare you.

So sorry that your dog is having this problem. I am not exactly sure why they are recommending an MRI. You should ask your vet if they can do abdominal and chest x-rays first to see if the problem can be diagnosed with just x-rays. You could also go to a different vet for a second opinion. Cancer is always a concern in an older dog that is losing weight so additional diagnostics should be done to try and determine the cause but x-rays could be done before doing an MRI.
