My dog has diarrhea, lethargy, and won't eat. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 2 months old

My 2y/o Golden Retriever has had diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite for 3 days now. Vomiting did occur with foamy bile but has stopped for over 24hrs. She refuses to eat solid food and have been giving 20mL of pedialyte and doses of nutristat around the clock.

Hello, sorry to hear about Chloe. Most common causes of diarrhea and vomiting may include a dietary indiscretion, inflammatory bowel disease, parasites and viral infections. Other causes may include liver, kidney, pancreatic, or Addison's disease. You can continue to feed her the pedialyte and offer a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and cottage cheese low fat for 3-5 days. Ultimately, if this does not improve, Chloe may need to be evaluated by a veterinarian to assess for any of the above conditions and administer the appropriate medications. Best of lock and hope this helps
