Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The urine pH does affect crystal/stone formation. The type of pH that is recommended is based on what type of crystals your car has or what you are trying to prevent. Typically this is controlled by diet and water intake (volume). I would recommend reaching out to your regular veterinarian to discuss which type of crystals you are concerned about and appropriate preventative measures. Good luck!

This is a very difficult question - alkaline urine decreases the risk of oxalate crystals but conversely increases the risk of struvite crystals (hence the use of acidifying diets). The most important thing that can be done is to maximise fluid intake (many water bowls inside and out - try different types of bowls, flavored chicken broth and water fountains also); a high quality food with highly digestible protein, and reduce stress and anxiety (calming supplements can help in cats predisposed to urinary tract inflammation). Monitor for any changes in toilet habits which may be an early indication of discomfort or stress
