Pet's info: Dog | Wire Fox Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 months and 8 days old | 16 lbs
I was reading up on what dogs can and cannot eat and I see that grapes are considered toxic. The problem is that my 4 month old fox terrier puppy ate 2-3 grapes 2 days ago. He has been acting the same since but this morning vomited up his puppy mix, which I had just changed. Is this a sign of concern? What should I do given that the grape consumption was 2 days ago?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am afraid that Frank may have ingested a dangerous amount of grapes. The toxic level is considered 0.18 ounces of grapes per pound. That is 1.8 ounces or 1-2 grapes for a 10 pound dog. It can take 24-48 hours for signs to appear, & vomiting is a consistent sign of possible toxicity. I would definitely have your veterinarian examine Frank as soon as possible. Blood work to evaluate his kidneys may be necessary, & treatment would depend on what is found. I would not wait , but have him seen soon. Good luck

It can take up to 1-3 days for signs of acute kidney failure to occur, but given that it has been four days since then and he vomited up a majority of the grape, I would be inclined to think that this is coincidence. I would not be concerned about it at this point in time, but should it continue, then I would take him into the vet for a health check.

Hello, grape toxicity can develop up 72 hours ingestion. The exact mechanism by which this happens is not fully understood but pets that have grape toxicity may suffer from kidney disease. Ideally, your pet should have her kidney values measured during this time period to make sure there is no sudden elevation in the values. If you chose to monitor at home, then you should watch for increases drinking, decreases urinations, vomiting, and a decreased appetite. Any of these would be signs that little bit is not doing well. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Unfortunately there is no toxic dosage for that and clinical signs can show up even after 48 hours from ingestion. I would suggest to have Mozzy checked by your veterinarian if you notice any sign like vomiting, diarrhoea, increased thirst and absence or decreased urination level.
