My dog ate a tampon. What if it doesn't pass or causes blockage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog ate a used tampon & it seems as though the string has passed through but I haven't seen the fuzzy part pass through yet. He had diarrhea earlier & his last bowel movement was barely anything. He isn't showing any other signs. Should I be worried?

As long as he's eating and feeling alright it should pass also. Encourage him to eat extra and make sure he is getting exercise so the food will pass through hopefully carrying the fuzzy part with it. He may have chewed it enough that you may not see it come out as one piece. Should he get an intestinal obstruction he would vomit, not feel well and strain to poop. I don't expect that to happen but if so he may need to have it surgically removed. Give it more time as long as he's acting normal.
