My puppy is not eating or drinking after rabies shot. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 14 days old | 13 lbs

My 5 month old Malti-poo (Benny) received his rabies shot on 9/16. It's been 2 days. He normally eats 2 soft foods and his kibble daily. But The first day after his shot, he only ate 1 soft food and half his kibble. The first day he also vomited once, white clear. Stool was soft/loose. Today is the second day and he hasn't eat anything at all and hasn't drank water. He has low energy but the same energy walking outside. He passed softer formed stool and urinated. But he isn't eating or drinking

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Benny! I think Benny maybe having a reaction to the vaccine. Vomiting and diarrhea can be symptoms of a reaction. Since it is getting worse and it's been 2 days I recommend having him see by your Vet. Usually for vaccine reactions steroids and antihistamines are given. They also may want to prescribe antacids and antinausea medications as well. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20lbs per day. Feed the bland diet due 3-5 days. I hope this helps and I wish Bennt a speedy recovery!
