My dog choked on a bone, then swallowed it. Is she okay internally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 1 day old | 4 lbs

Me dad couldn't resist and fe my dog w/o permission. My dog choked on a small pork rib bone, I did the heimlich maneuver, and she vomitted but swallowed the rest. Her poop seemed fine. She's her normal happy self though? I'm worried there's damage to her throat or intestines?

Poor Lunch! Remind your family that bones can kill dogs, the should get no table food at all. A chihuahua is very far removed from wolf ancestors. ;) ok, that's enough lecturing. But you're right to be concerned. It depends on the size of the bone that she swallowed if it will cause any problems. Continue to monitor for normal activity, eating, drinking, defecation. If she has any vomiting or seeming constipation or straining to defecate she needs to see the veterinarian ASAP. Bones can potentially cause obstruction of the G.I. tract or perforations. Depending on how long ago she had the bone you could consider going to the vet for an exam and x-ray to see if the bone is still visible in her G.I. tract and if the vet thinks it's likely to cause any problems. Primarily just monitor her for normal appetite and activity and get her to the vet at the first sign of illness. Sometimes bones are other foreign bodies may not cause any problem until several weeks after ingested. I hope Lunch continues to do well.
