My dogs are coughing with nasal discharge. Is it kennel cough? When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 months and 1 day old | 6 lbs

I have 3 small terrier's, a 6 year old & 9 month old twins. The female puppy started coughing 2-3 days ago, only a few times a day, especially if over excited or playing. After 24-36 hrs i noticed that the other puppy(male) has now started a smaller lighter cough & now the 6yr old. There is some discharge from the nose of the two poppies.. Could this be kennel cough? Also, I can see the vet on Wednesday, however should I wait that long or so they need to be seen as soon as possible?

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection (inflammatory, allergic, infective). Kennel cough infection could be definitively a possibility. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. As long as they do not show any systemic sign (like inappetence, lethargy, hyperthermia) they can be seen on Wednesday.
