Why is my dog vomiting grass and food? Can I help him at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 64 lbs

My 7yo neutered male standard poodle has been licking the carpet inside the house and eating huge amounts of grass outside (dry, not green) for almost 24 hours. He's coughing and seems to be gagging, occasionally vomiting some of the grass. His stomach is not sensitive, his gums are pink, he's drinking water, but vomits up solid food. Is there anything I can do at home for him? I can't afford a vet visit.

The good thing is that this doesn't seem to be a severe problem at this time, so no need to rush to the vet. Dogs can sometimes have a temporary stomach ache that causes them to vomit like this. I would first try to discourage him from licking the carpet and eating the grass, because these may be causing some of the irritation and would not be helping anything. Give the stomach a rest for now by not feeding him. He may vomit more, but this should hopefully stop soon. You can feed him again about three hours after he vomits. Start by giving a cup of boiled chicken and rice. If he keeps that down, then you can feed more in 2- 3 hours, but keep the meals light for the next couple of days. If he's continually vomiting for more than 24 hours, starts acting lethargic, or vomits blood, then he will have to go to the vet for treatment, because the problem may be severe. I hope that helps and Sam feels better soon.
