My cat has red blood and black stool. Is it old blood or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, my cat is 18 but in very good health. She eats, drinks and uses the bathroom normally. The other day she has some streaks of red blood in her stool and her backside looked a little bloody so I wiped it with a wet wipe and it was fine after that. This morning I noticed a normal looking stool but with a blacker part at one end. Could this just be the older blood from the other day or is it a sign of something more serious? (And could that isolated bleeding have been from a hairball?)

She may just have some inflammation in her stomach/interstines. Hairballs usually cause vomiting but anything that causes gastrointestinal inflammation can cause blood in the stool. If she seems fine otherwise than you could monitor her for a day and see if it resolves. If not, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can run some lab-work to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to help treat. You could also add a probiotic, like Fortiflora or Proviable, to her diet and see if that helps.
