Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 9 years and 10 months old

What's your stab in the dark on this one... prostate swollen on 9 year old Kelpy, ultrasound showed lots of cysts on prostate. He has had to have bladder drained numerous times. Been on antibiotics for a week and abit. Looked like he was coming good, but last 2 days he is worse. Blood in anus as well

The clinical picture you described is unfortunately compatible with a prostatic cancer, most likely malignant (most common type is carcinoma). Severe infection and inflammation is still possible, but usually response to antibiotics is pretty quick. A sampling of the prostate will confirm this suspicion (different procedures for that depending on your veterinarian's skills). I am happy to discuss further details in other posts on the forum or if you request a consultation.

This is not a good sign i'm afraid, he needs to have a CT scan done in order to see how bad the condition is, it might have metastasised to other places in the body as well. If it is a tumor but it'swell bordered, there is still a possibility to have it surgically removed by a specialist, that would be his best chance.
