My dog's ear infection isn't gone after Amoxicillin. What next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 8 months old | 43 lbs

Hi, My dog is a mix breed German Shepherd dog, 8.5 years old and weighs around 42-43 pounds. He developed a severe ear infection and our vet prescribed amoxicillin 700mg twice daily mixed with food. It has been 2 weeks and the ear infection has reduced A LOT but not completely gone as he still shakes his head sometimes. Should we continue on Amoxicillin or change the medication? Thanks!

I would recommend adding in a topical ear antibiotic medication as long as his ear drum is intact. Amoxicillin is typically only used if an inner ear infection is present and the ear drum has ruptured. Otherwise a topical Rx ear med is needed along with an ear cleaner (purchased from the vet or at your local pet store) to remove debris in between applications.
