My kitten has a big, solid stomach. Is it worms or something serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 months and 7 days old | 9 lbs

I have two fixed 7 month old kittens from the same litter. One seems to distribute weight evenly throughout her body, while my other doesn't. She has a really large stomach and isn't as filled in as my other kitten in other areas. There aren't any lumps inside her stomach, but it feels somewhat solid. We think she was the runt of the litter and she has had worms in the past (treated). She weighs close to nine pounds. People have asked if she were pregnant. Should she go to the vet?

Yes, I would take her to the vet for an exam. I agree, the stomach looks pretty big. If she was only dewormed once as a kitten that was not likely enough. It is recommended they get dewormed 3-4 times before they are 4 months old. She could have worms or that could be fluid build up....like from FIP. It could also just be her body type but it's best to have a vet check her out and start with checking her for worms. It may be as easy as that. Hope that helps. Best wishes!
