My dog's anal glands smelled fishy. Should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 9 years and 9 months old | 3.6 lbs

Last night Bella had a bit of a fishy smell from her behind which I know to be caused by anal gland fluid. She wasn't acting terribly weird, but I could tell she may have had to go to the bathroom. After taking her out a third time, she finally went. I haven't noticed the smell since. Should she be taken to the vet or could she have emptied them after going to the bathroom?

Anal glands are normally expressed during the act of defecation. If you continue to smell the odor, see her licking her hind end or dragging her hind end along the floor, then she should be examined by your veterinarian for possible impacted anal glands.
