Why does my dog keep reverse sneezing so often? What are the causes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 8 months and 6 days old

We adopted an 8 month old black lab from a rescue, she is the sweetest pup! She has bouts of reverse sneezing frequently. It's not kennel cough as we have another 1.5 year old lab who isn't showing any symptoms. I understand it's harmless, but I'm wanting to get to the bottom of it, I know it can be caused by excitement, but sometimes it seems to just happen out of the blue, I read that it could be caused from a trachea injury, since we don't have information on where she came from, it could be.

Thank you for using Pet Coach! Reverse sneezes are similar to regular sneezes in that it is triggered by something that irritates the upper airway (nasal passages and nasopharynx). Occasional reverse sneezes are normal. However, since Luna is having frequent and repeated bouts of reverse sneezed, it could indicate that something more serious is triggering it. Allergies, an environmental irritant (such as perfume) or even foreign bodies (like grass) in the back of the nasal passages can cause reverse sneezes. If she continues to have bouts of reverse sneezing, or if she also develops discharge from her nose or bad breath, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian to get Luna checked out! She is lucky to have you!
