My cat has painful chin bumps. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11.2 lbs

My cat has three, firm bumps on his chin. There is little hair on the bumps. and little red circular scabs on the bumps. He meows when someone touches them. I was wondering what it might be, and if he needs to be taken to the vet or if I can take care of it home. P.s. I don't know if this might be connected, but they started to appear shortly after we adopted a dog. Before we got the dog, buiscuit my cat was the only animal in the house. Thank you for your time.

What you are seeing looks to be feline chin acne. This is a common thing we see in cats. What works very well reducing the occurrence of acne, is benzoyl peroxide. I would take him in to be seen by your veterinarian so that you can get a prescription for the most appropriate topical ointment to treat this. If left untreated, the acne can get very severe and become even more difficult to treat and resolve. I hope this helps!
