My dog is throwing up and has soft stool. When should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 17 lbs

My 2 1/2 year dog (a dachshund/ chihuahua mix) had soft stools yesterday, seems tired (otherwise normal), therw up this morning, and had another very little soft stool in the morning). What should I watch out for before rushing her to the Vet? What foods should I give her? (photo 1 is before and photo 2 is from right now)

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If she's been vomiting and having soft stool, I would transition him over to a bland diet for the next few days. I would feed chicken or beef with rice. You can add a little cottage cheese into the food as well for flavor. If he is not getting any better or certainly if she is worsening I would get her to your vet to be seen right away. From the vomiting she is probably a bit dehydrated and could benefit from some fluids. If she does not want to drink water on his own you can syringe some water into her mouth but take care not to syringe too much as this can cause vomiting on already upset stomach. If she has a history of eating things she shouldn't, I would probably get her in sooner rather than later in case there is an intestinal obstruction. This could also be a mild case of dietary indiscretion which will typically resolve on its own after being on a bland diet. You can also start her on Purina forriflora, which is a probiotic. I hope she gets better soon! Please feel free to contact me with any further questions or concerns you may have. I am also available via consultation if needed.
