Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 7 months old

My dog has been inducing vomiting by eating grass and leaves for the past two to three days and has been throwing up yellow bile. I really would like an explanation if I need to take my dog to a vet. Please and thank you

Hi and thank you for posting your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to say exactly what the issue is with Riley sight unseen, but I can certainly offer a few possibilities as to why he may be eating grass and what may be causing the vomiting. It is not clear why dogs eat grass. There is some speculation they eat it to curb a upset stomach, others say they eat grass to get extra fiber in their diet but may actually cause an upset stomach. However the case may be with grass, Riley has been vomiting more frequently lately and that is never normal. Vomiting has many causes and is more serious if it is accompanied by lethargy, decreased appetite, or diarrhea. Dietary indiscretion can cause vomiting (such as eating things he should be) and typically resolves when they stop eating the item that is causing the upset. However, vomiting can also be caused by something more concerning such as bacterial or viral infections, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, aurorean dysfunction such as liver or kidney disease. My best advice is to try and stop him from eating grass for a few days and see if that helps lessen the vomiting. If he continues to vomit after a few days of not eating grass, I would take him in to see his veterinarian for a full work up to determine the underlying cause. I hope this has helped and I wish you and Riley the absolute best!
