My dog's broken nail led to a swollen, raw paw. Is it infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 130 lbs

My dog broke a nail. I've been cleaning it and wrapping it to keep in clean. I got him a cone collar so I could take the wrap off and let it to the air and started soaking it. From his licking (before I got the collar) made between 2 of his toes raw and a little oozy (a major reason I wanted to leave it out to the air). His paw is also swollen. He's not sensitive to touch so I don't think anything is broken. Is there anything else you'd recommend doing?

I am sorry to hear about Titus. I am concerned based on your description and the photos that Titus could have an infection in his toe. The open wound due to the broken nail is a site where bacteria can enter the body. The discharge and swelling is a sign of infection. Your dog likely needs oral antibiotics and also possibly a pain medication. Until you are able to have him seen keep using the e-collar on him if he is licking the toe and you can apply a topical antibiotic like neosporin to the area several times a day.
