My dog ate a plastic bag and is acting normal. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

I think yesterday evening my dog (75-80 lb lab mix) ate a gallon ziplock bag (we found part of chewed up ziptop but not rest of the bag). Around when I suspect he ate it he'd been acting nauseous (licking air, chewing grass/leaves on walk, but stopped after being fed). Since then he's been acting normal including sleeping, eating and drinking normally. Has had two normal poops without plastic in them, the last about 45 minutes ago. Do I just wait it out, or should I go to vet to induce vomitting

At this point, you can probably just monitor him and see how he does. We typically like to induce vomiting within an hour after eating the foreign material. Since he is acting fine and doesn't seem to be having problems then it may just pass through without a problem. You could call your vet and let them know that he ate something abnormal and make sure they don't want to examine him and/or take an x-ray. Hopefully, he chewed up the bag into smaller pieces and it will pass without a problem. Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and decreased appetite.
